A. Priority Sanitation Investments
1. Wastewater Treatment Plant Rehabilitation & Upgrading
We restore and upgrade existing priority Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs) to ensure efficient sewage management and environmental protection. Our work includes:- Installing interceptors to prevent sewage leaks into river streams.
- Implementing methane capture technology to reduce emissions and enhance sustainability.
2. Solid Waste Management & Recycling
Developing a state-of-the-art Recycling Plant and Engineered Landfill (RPEL) in Chigumula to:- Maximize waste re-use through innovative recycling methods.
- Reduce emissions caused by uncontrolled waste disposal.
3. Public Sanitation Infrastructure Development
Improving hygiene and sanitation facilities in public spaces such as:- Schools, health centers, and market centers to prevent open defecation and reduce disease spread.
- Enhancements to support persons with disabilities.
- Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) facilities and training to boost girls’ school retention and empower female entrepreneurs.
4. Sanitation Marketing Strategy Development
Supporting effective sanitation marketing strategies for Blantyre metropolitan area, promoting community engagement and sustainable practices.5. Technical Assistance & Policy Support
Expert engineering design and supervision including:- Sanitation tariff assessments for financial sustainability.
- Bylaws updates to modernize sanitation policies.
- Safeguards instruments ensuring environmental and social protection.
B. Water Supply Improvements
Strengthening water infrastructure to ensure reliable and resilient supply by:- Rehabilitating and upgrading Mudi intake and water treatment plant to reinforce water system reliability.
- Upgrading transmission networks from Chileka to Blantyre, including reservoirs and solar-powered pumping stations.
- Replacing aged pipes and reducing leaks.
- Expanding distribution networks with smart water kiosks in selected zones for improved access.
C. Institutional Capacity Strengthening
We focus on climate resilience and financial sustainability by:- Addressing climate change risks and improving BWB’s governance and financial systems through a Performance-Based Grant (PBG).
- Enhancing BCC’s capacity to manage sanitation with focus on climate adaptation and service sustainability.
- Supporting sector investment planning and policy development for long-term water and sanitation resilience.
