ENHANCING PROJECT MANAGEMENT SKILLS FOR MWSP-1 THROUGH CONTRACT MANAGEMENT

The Malawi Water and Sanitation Project-1 (MWSP-1) team, comprising of Blantyre Water Board (BWB), Blantyre City Council (BCC), and the Ministry of Water and Sanitation, has been attending a two-day contract management training, facilitated by renowned engineer Bogdan Opera, aimed to ensure compliance with contractual terms and conditions during implementation of MWSP-1.
Speaking during the opening of the training, Director of Technical Services for BWB, Mavuto Chiipanthenga, said that understanding contract components is crucial for building strong relationships with consultants and ensuring the successful implementation of MWSP-1. He added that the training demonstrates government’s commitment to effectively managing the project.
Director of Sanitation in the Ministry of Water and Sanitation Dr Modesta Kanjaye said that the training will help government and the implementing agencies in ensuring projects are well managed.
“Let us continue building project teams with strong knowledge in contract management so that our country benefits more from these projects,” Said Kanjaye.
Chief Executive Officer for Blantyre City Council, Dennis Chinseu said the training was an eye opener and would help project implementers to improve and address challenges they have been facing.
The training drew up project staff from MWSP-1, Blantyre Water Board, Blantyre City Council, Lilongwe Water Board, Lilongwe City Council and Ministry of Water and Sanitation.
Among the major contracts MWSP-1 will be managing are the following:
– Rehabilitation and Upgrading of Wastewater Treatment Plants: Soche and Blantyre wastewater treatment plants
– Construction of Public Sanitation Facilities: 10 primary schools, 5 markets, and 5 clinics, with technical assistance
– Consultancy Services for Construction Supervision: Mzedi Access Road
– Consultancy Services for Detailed Designs and Construction Supervision
