Component 2 – Priority Sanitation Investments

This component aims to increase access to safely managed sanitation and reduce environmental pollution that has significant public health impacts in Blantyre.

Rehabilitation and Upgrade of Sewer Network

The project is rehabilitating 50km of sewer networks and associated treatment works in the Blantyre and Soche catchments. This includes installation of interceptors to reduce leaks into streams and methane capture systems to reduce emissions from Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs).

Technical Assistance for Solid Waste Management

The project supports equipment and tools for sorting and collecting solid waste at source, with business development services and private sector integration. It includes the construction of a modern recycling plant and engineered landfill in Chigumula to promote reuse and minimize environmental impact.

Construction and Upgrade of Public Sanitation Facilities

The project is constructing improved sanitation facilities in ten schools, five health centers, and five markets. These will include:

  • Toilets with disability-friendly access and menstrual hygiene management (MHM) facilities
  • PPP-based operations for public toilets in markets to ensure sustainability and job creation
  • TA for engineering design, sanitation tariff assessment, and safeguards implementation
