Component 1 – Water Supply Improvements

Under this component, the project is financing investments to improve water production, stabilize and improve network operational efficiency, reduce water losses, increase energy efficiency, improve water supply service quality, and expand water access to unserved areas. These efforts help reduce GHG emissions and enhance the resilience of Blantyre’s water infrastructure.

Rehabilitation and Upgrade of Mudi Intake and Water Treatment Plant

This intervention strengthens the resilience of the water supply system by providing an alternative water source during interruptions caused by frequent flooding and siltation along the Shire River.

Priority Water Supply Transmission Network Upgrade

The project is upgrading 20.54km of transmission pipelines from Chileka to Blantyre and constructing four reservoirs with a total capacity of 40,000m³. Additionally, six solar-powered booster stations are being installed to boost energy efficiency and strengthen climate resilience.

Distribution Network Upgrade

The project is replacing approximately 266km of aging pipeline and upgrading pressure management systems. These upgrades are essential for recovering water lost through leaks, improving water availability, and serving more residents efficiently.

Distribution Network Expansion

The water supply is being expanded to new zones, and 60 water kiosks are being upgraded to smart kiosks (30 new and 30 upgraded). The project also includes technical assistance for engineering designs, procurement, supervision, and safeguards implementation to support all water infrastructure development.
