Project Objective

The main objective of MWSP-1 is to increase access to improved water supply and sanitation services in Blantyre Metropolitan Area and to enhance the operational and financial efficiency of the Blantyre Water Board.

Project Duration

The MWSP-1 is a 5-year project which started on 6 June 2023 and shall end in March 2029.

Project Cost and Financing

The project cost is USD 148.5 million. USD145.0 million is coming from the International Development Association (IDA) of the World Bank while USD3.5 million is the contribution of the Government of Malawi.

Key Investments

  • Rehabilitating and upgrading Mudi intake and water treatment plant to strengthen the resilience of water supply.
  • Upgrading priority water supply transmission network from Chileka to Blantyre, construction of associated reservoirs, and installation of solar power plants in Blantyre pumping stations.
  • Upgrading distribution network including replacement of aged pipes to recover water leaks.
  • Expanding distribution network and construction of smart water kiosks in selected zones.

Priority Sanitation Investments

  • Rehabilitating and upgrading sewerage network and connections.
  • Rehabilitating and upgrading existing priority Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs).
  • Constructing a new solid waste Recycling Plant and Engineered Landfill (RPEL) in Chigumula.
  • Constructing and upgrading public sanitation facilities in selected schools and health centers.
